GRADING Blade Runner 2049

I'm planning to do a lot of film analysis in the short future. I'll start with a simple one. I'm going thoroughly through blade runner. this movie is amazing on so many levels I can't even..

Obviously, i wasn’t the one who graded Blade Runner, those people know way more than me. But his is a good exercise to go through.

so ill be showing you how to quickly reverse a grade and then grade it back

now this isn't a 1:1 match it's just something you can also do to reverse engineer a look/grade

NEW LOGO DESIGNS FOR "ARTIST FOR FUN"

so my domain name is “ARTIST FOR FUN”. I decided to go for that name because if you are NOT having fun at what you do… then you might need to reconsider your path.

SOOOO, im not a designer or anything like that, i know a thing or two… but this idea came out of nowhere and i had to put it down on “paper”.

artist_fro_fiun_new_logo.jpg

would love to hear if some of you have any thoughts on how to make it better. its just a personal logo that i might not ever use.

it doesn't really matter because i had fun doing it.

cheers guys!

DID A WEE TALK IN MY HOME TOWN

So while i was on my vacation in Slovenia the kind folks at one of the creative centers invited me to do a talk. And because i was bored i did it.

I think it went great, we had around 20 attendees which is quite a lot for the town.Obviously i made a fool of myself but that’s just in my nature. I hope i gave the listeners some insight on what i do and how they could do the same.

cheers

SUPER TOP SECRET BLEND MODES IN PS

So a quick tip i use all the time and i don't know how to do to grading and edits in photoshop without it.

1.JPG

here is the final grade i did for this photo. and i wanted Eva’s face to be more saturated and obviously i went for that teal orange bull*hit look :D

but a bit more desaturated and “moody” so it feels more cinematic.

so how can we make our lives easier in terms of determining color and saturation for the image you may ask?

well good sir, ill tell you.

1; create a new layer and fill it with red

2; set that layers blend mode to hue.

3; make some coffee

So by doing this your image might look something like this.

2.JPG

the basics on how this works is, the more red it is, the more saturated that area of the image is.

so if you are doing an edit by combining more images together, you do this and with ease you can see the saturation values of different images.

ok! so this work

to put this to over 9000!

let’s do another step.

1; put down a new layer and color it with 50% gray. or red. it doesn’t matter. don’t ask why…

2; set it to luminosity

3; see the matrix

now you should be seeing this.

3.JPG

here i also added a saturation adjustment layer and cranked it to 100 just to see more of the colors.

and now you see all the hue’s of your image.

same goes for this. When you have it you can see how your different images differ in color and this way you can use curves or selective color to adjust layers or in this case see how your main subject will complement or be contrasted with the background.

also one more SUPER DUPER TIP!

it’s also cool to first set your tones of the images in black and white mode.

4.JPG

this is so you get the luma tones right first before adjusting the chroma.

i like how that sounds… luma before chroma.

and that is it for this quick tip.

stay awesome and i hope this helps you in some way.

if not…

hmm…

then i'm a failure in life i guess…
